Ambassador Abdali Met with the Deputy Prime Minister of Japan

On August 4, 2021, Ambassador Shaida Mohammad Abdali had a meeting with H.E. Taro Aso, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Japan. Ambassador Abdali spoke about the Taliban’s brutal campaign of violence against civilians and the Afghan security forces across Afghanistan and highlighted the dire humanitarian situation caused by the Taliban’s offensive, including the high number of civilian casualties, increasing civilian displacement, serious violation of human rights, destruction of public infrastructures, and disruption of provision of civil services in areas fallen to the Taliban.

Ambassador Abdali also highlighted the commitment and capabilities of the Afghan defense and security forces to safeguard the shared achievements of the people of Afghanistan and the international community during the last two decades. He also shared his concerns over the continued ties between the Taliban and regional and international terrorist networks and the presence of foreign fighters in Afghanistan operating under the umbrella of the Taliban and highlighted the importance of continued international support, including that of Japan, to the Afghan defense and security forces to address the security threats these groups could pose to the region and beyond.

The two sides exchanged views about the recent developments in the Afghan peace process and ways Japan could contribute to the success of this process.
